At least 176 people lost their lives due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the territory of Kalehe, South Kivu, during the night of May 4 to 5, 2023.

The most affected villages are Bushushu and Nyamukubi, where around 100 people are missing, according to the provincial government.

Kalehe Territory Administrator Master Thomas Bakenga said schools and more than 1,000 houses were destroyed in Nyamukubi and Bushushu. He also specified that the national road number 2, Kalehe-Goma section, is impassable due to landslides and the overflow of the Cibira and Nyamukubi rivers.

In addition, bridges, a health center and a market were destroyed, he added. The search continues to try to remove other bodies from the rubble.

Organizations, MPs, local authorities and civic structures are calling for emergency assistance for the affected families.

Governor Théo Kasi went there and promised that his government will take care of the care of the injured and the funerals of the victims.
